Globe

Globe

Globe is a world clock that displays a city currently enjoying happy hour (5-6pm), shifting to a city in the next time zone each hour. It was designed as part of a research project: Objects with Meaningful Associations. In this project, I interviewed individuals and designed personalised products inspired by their life stories. These products contain meaningful associations to significant aspects of the user's past, present and anticipated future.

I think I’ve been to 125 countries over the years
— Alex, 56

Alex's life-long love of travel led me to consider ways I could bring about positive memories of the places he's visited around the world. Many of the cities displayed in the clock relate to Alex's solo travels and shared experiences with his daughter: "when [she] finished school [...] she and I went off by ourselves to the Middle East and Italy", and his partner: "it was freezing cold when we were in Moscow". Several cities that Alex is yet to visit were also included to evoke his future anticipations for further travels to new destinations.

ALEX'S LIFE Story

Alex is a 56-year-old father of three with a career in IT sales and client management, living with his partner near the northern beaches of Sydney. His upbringing was fickle as his family moved around Australia every few years to follow his father's professional role in the army. This "nomadic" lifestyle continued in his adult life as he lived and worked in various countries across the globe and developed a passion for travel. Alex looks forward to retirement, freeing time for writing, travelling and being a pro-active granddad.
